One of four major subfields in political science, often abbreviated to ir. The focus of this subfield is global affairs. This subfield asks questions like how doe countries interact?". Balance of power recognizes that the relative power of states is not equal. The general idea is that smaller, less powerful states would ally themselves together to balance the greater power of the one state. Balancing allies would always reflect the power structures reality. Balance of power fails though because of various divided powers, all having different interests. Throughout the 18th century, europe was built on the balance of power concept, which can be seen through various alliances of countries during the many conflicts. The balance of power approach can be blamed for world war i, hence the need for a new model. In june 1914, serbian anarchists assassinated the austro-hungarian heir, grand duke. In response to this action, the austro-hungarian empire declared war on serbia.
