Token economies can be used to decrease absenteeism and reduce disciplinary actions in a work setting. Tokens could be earned by making suggestions on improving safety and cutting costs. Gains from token economy show greater maintenance than other behaviour change procedures. Time and effort required to set up a token economy and train staff, as well as cost of backup reinforcers. Tokens have been criticized as demeaning, but participants rate their satisfaction as high. At the norfolk island penal colony, the backup reinforcers were being released from prison. Tokens are reinforcing because they are associated with backup reinforcers. Ex: female student who has an intense fear of escalators. The behavioural treatment program was that she met a therapist at a large department store.
