Document Summary

A behavioural program in which individuals can earn tokens for a variety of desirable behaviours and can exchange the earned tokens for backup reinforcers is called token economy. A system in which people purchase bus or subway tokens that they exchange for access to public transit is a somewhat simpler token economy. Although a token economy could be set up for an individual, the term token economies generally refers to token systems with groups. Using token reinforcers has 2 main advantages: They can be given immediately after a desirable behaviour occurs and cashed in at a later time for a backup reinforcer. Tokens that are paired with many diff backup reinforcers are generalized conditioned reinforcers and therefore do not depend on a specific motivating operation for their strength.
