PSYCO241 Lecture 4: Dissonance.doc
Document Summary
Davis & jones (1960) instructed to read a biography of someone and then had participant insult the person to see if they blame the victim. told participants that they wanted to see people"s emotional responses. half the people were forced to and the other half were given the choice and prodded along. allowed them to have a chance to meet the person after the study was over if they wanted to. commitment was low choice high choice. If you make people suffer for something for no reason, they need to justify why they needed to go through much anguish to participate in it. ex. hazing to get into a frat ex. therapy (the clients who had insurance cover everything put the least effort in, whereas the ones who could barely afford it were the most motivated to get better) ex. cult leaders make ppl spend lots of time + money to commit themselves to the organization.
