Document Summary

People don"t like inconsistencies in their beliefs attitudes, behavior. Feel the most dissonance when inconsistent cognitions are salient to you, or easily accessible. People making a choice between 2 alternatives will produce some dissonance: the harder the choice, the more dissonance, talk about positive aspects of thing you chose and neg of the one you didn"t to remove dissonance. Ie when offered to lie was weak justification, vs which was strong justification. Could also be praise, grades, promotion, pressure from loved ones. People who have no choice but to act inconsistently with values don"t experience much dissonance. But if they have a choice on whether to do/think something, dissonance will be higher. People forced to write a essay contradicting their beliefs vs people who had a choice to. More commited they are to the action, the more dissonance. If action can be changed/taken back easily reduces dissonance.
