NU FS356 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Bone Mineral, Motor Neuron, Strength Reduction
Document Summary
Nufs 356 introduction to body composition over time. Normal body composition is hard to define because there is so much varitation between individuals. The variation is due to a complex interaction of genes, environment and behavior. We often cant tell the difference between age related normal and disease related abnormal because they are always happening side by side. We use methods that measure both the fm and ffm. Measurement techniques include skin folds, underwater weighing, air displacement, (cid:271)ioele(cid:272)tri(cid:272) i(cid:373)peda(cid:374)(cid:272)e (cid:894)bia(cid:895). All these (cid:373)ethods are (cid:272)heap a(cid:374)d do(cid:374)"t use fancy equipment but they cannot tell where the compartments of ffm are. Dexa (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry) is the current gold standard of measurement because it measures bf, lbm, bm. You can look just at regions of the body too i. e. look at the amount of fat in the abdominal area. The limitiation is that there are only a few machines and they are expensive.
