NU FS356 Chapter Notes - Chapter Article for L19 : Skeletal Muscle, Body Composition, Catabolism
Document Summary
Sarcopenia: the loss of muscle mass and strength (lower than 2 standard deviations than what is expected for healthy adults, gender specific). In other words it is a catabolic condition aka muscle wasting. Remember, aging is associated with decreasing fat-free mass. The main components of ffm that decrease are skeletal muscle mass and bone density. Mainly due to the physiological and behavioral changes that are associated with aging. With the aging of the population combined with the obesity as an epidemic this is the result. It is also hard to study because even though a ct could help us this is unethical due to the amount of radiation. Cancer patients are having them done anyways so we can take advantage of this and use it for research. A healthy diet and physical activity that includes both resistance and aerobic exercise is the best prevention and treatment.
