Document Summary
Eas 100 lecture 22 ocean currents and movement. Ocean basins and water distribution: water covers 70% of the earth"s surface. In the northern hemisphere 46% land 54% water. In the southern hemisphere only 12% covered in land! (antarctica and australia) The max depth of the ocean is just shy of 11 km in the mariana trench. There have been long-term global changes as a result of multiple ice-ages and tectonic activity. Salinity changes depending where you are on the globe: more evaporation at the equator = more particles precipitate = higher salinity. Total salinity is 3. 5% on average: sodium and chloride make up the majority, also sulfate, magnesium, calcium, etc, carbonate is very important in managing the acidity of the ocean! Two types: surface currents from air and wind, density driven currents at the sea floor. All impacted by the rotation of the earth.
