NURS 3550H Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Cimetidine, Central Nervous System Depression, Parietal Cell
Document Summary
Effect: decrease gastric acid release (decrease release of h+ ions by the h+ ion potassium. Decrease acid pain: gastric / duodenal ulcers. Decrease the destruction of the gi tract by acid allowing for healing: gastro esophageal reflux disease (gerd) Decrease acid and pain: decreases damage caused by acid. Decrease release of gastric acid and formation of ulcers. Cns effects: dizziness, confusion, hallucinations, cns depression / excitation, possibly due to cross reactivity of h1 receptors or possible presence of h2 receptors in the cns. Changes ph: may alter absorption of other drugs. Inhibits cytochrome p-450: inhibit metabolism of other drugs, risk for toxicity. Kinetics short half life: acid labile (destroyed in the acid of the stomach, cyp 2c19 inhibitor. Mechanism: directly inhibits acid pump irreversible parietal cell needs to form new pumps in order to produce more gastric acid. Indications: heartburn / acid indigestion, gastric / duodenal ulcers. Zollinger-ellison syndrome: hospital prevent stress ulcers.
