Document Summary

Conjugation: antibiotic resistance essay written in lass as part of the exam. Transformation: dead bacteria carrying a resistance gene in dna can transfer the gene to another bacteria. Experiment: injected a mouse with a bacteria with capsules, the mouse died of ammonia. From the dead mouse you can isolate the ammonia. Another mouse is given a different strain of the bacteria which grows but does not kill the mouse. If you kill the capsule bacteria then inject it will not the mouse it will not grow within the mouse. A mix of capsuled and non-capsuled bacteria is fatal while either on it"s own is not fatal. Dna from dead bacteria are picked up through transformation, which allows new bacteria to produce plasmids. Recombination occurs between the donor and recipient dna. Transformation: the transfer of genetic information by free, extracellular dna. Bacterial viruses sit on the cell surface, they recognize the cell membrane, and inject it"s dna into the cell.
