Social straiicaion: is the hierarchical arrangement of large social groups based on their control over basic resources. It refers to persistent paterns of social inequality in society: how wealth, power, and presige are socially distributed and transmited from one generaion to the next. It can describe the extent to which inequality exists (in terms of either the possession of or access to social and economic resources) It can be used to determine whether changed in equality have occurred over ime. It can be used to explain group behaviour. Status: is a rank or posiion in a social hierarchy. Closed society: a social system in which posiions are allocated by ascripion is not meritocraic. Posiions are allocated based on factors other than achievement, such as ethnic origin, gender, age, social origin, etc. Low rates of intergeneraional and intergeneraional social mobility. Open society: a social system in which posiions are achieved, not ascribed, it is called a meritocracy.
