Web-fed offset - uses rolls of substrate for production. Offset web printing is generally used for runs in excess of five or ten thousand impressions (roll -to -roll). Web-fed presses are divided into two general classes: Typically used for lower quality print output -newspapers. Dries primarily through absorption into the paper and evaporation into the air. A typical coldset configuration is often a series of vertically arranged print units and peripherals. As newspapers seek new markets, which often require higher quality, they may add a heatset tower (with a dryer) to help inks "cure" on the surface by polymerisation rather than by evaporation or absorption alone. Typically used for higher quality print output - magazines. Overall more expensive than coldset, different equipment, higher quality substrates. Inks dry by evaporation in a dryer positioned just after the printing units, and is set by chiller rollers soon after.
