1470: one of the most famous engravings of the time, we do not know what the subject is meant to be. It is very unlikely that there is any specific subject. 1478: pagan subject matter, when an artist makes prints, it is most often not on commission. Albrecht durer: made engravings of both christian and classical subjects, widely diffused, marketed himself through prints. Four horsemen of the apocalypse, woodcut, 1498: pushes the limits of the medium, very sophisticated wood cut, financed very large, folio-sized wood cuts of the apocalypse. Madonna of the monkey, engraving, 1498: created unprecedently rich engravings, you cannot shade with engravings, the rich and velvety darks are individual lines layered to create an incredible sense of texture and of rich darks. Raphael and printmaking: raphael engaged in printmaking, unlike durer, raphael turned to a collaborator, marcantonio raimondi, the two individuals worked together to create a series of very impressive prints.
