Sheets of metal with carvings pushed into the surface. Shading is on the inside of the carvings. More sophisticated and rare (less common, harder to replicate) The artists can make the lines as thin as they want (as if they were drawing) Although they cannot make mistakes bc there is not erasing lines they create in metal. Wooden surfaces; the carvings instead are carved outside the lines instead of in. The shading would be the pieces of wood sticking out from the surface. You can combine them with movable press (book illustrations). You can make many more copies of a wood cut, whereas you cannot with a metal plate. Form of crude art if you could not afford a painting.
