PSYC 3533 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Parasympathetic Nervous System, Mae, Ope
Document Summary
The sexual response cycle comes primarly from the masters and johnson research. Three stages of sexual response: excitement, orgasm, resolution. Two basic physiological changes occur: vasoconstriction blood vessels dilate and blood flows into the genital region, myotonia muscles contract in genitals and body. The scrotum thickens and pulls closer to the body. Vasocongestion occurs = erection: produced by direct stimulation, stimulation of other body parts, or erotic thoughts, also depends on other factors such as age, fatigue, alcohol use and other drugs. Several arteries supply the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum: vasodilation allows blood to flow into the penis. Muscle around arteries relaxes: veins that carry blood away from the penis are constricted, nitric oxide is one of the neurotransmitters invlolved. A reverse process makes erections go away: vasoconstriction, usually following orgasm, epinephrine and norepinephrine are the main neurotransmitters involved.
