Observed 282 women and 312 men in more than 10,000 sexual cycles of arousal and orgasm r. 3 stages of sexual response: excitement, orgasm, resolution. Masters and johnson originally proposed there are 4 phases (excitement, plateau, orgasm, resolution) Myotonia: occurs when muscles contract, throughout the body. Corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum fill (becoming engorged) with blood. By direct physical stimulation of genitals, stimulating other parts of body, erotic thoughts. Can take place slowly as a result of age, alcohol, fatigue. Few drops secreted by cowper"s gland appear at tip of penis. Not ejaculated by may contain active sperm. Scrotum thickens, scrotum sac tenses, scrotum pulled up and closer to body. Spermatic cords shorten pulling testes closer to body. Late in the excitement phase, vasocongestion and myotonia continue to build until there"s sufficient tension for orgasm.
