SOCSCI 2CC3 Lecture 11:
Document Summary
We need to begin by providing children with warmth, love, understanding and guidance. The researchers recognize these variables are necessary for the healthy growth and development of children. Parents/the adults in the children"s lives are responsible for providing the child with the basic foundations of a healthy personality. The child"s self-esteem should be established, they should feel lovable and worthwhile and respect others, and expect respect in return. The parents themselves may be under racial pressures and frustrations however, it is the adult"s responsibility to make sure the cycle of prejudice and discrimination is broken. It is seen as their responsibility because children are unable to address these issues themselves. Positive self-esteem establishes confidence and facilitates success for the young. It is incumbent upon the adults to hold the child to standards of achievement relative to their abilities (and on a realistic basis). Children will then be able to meet and solve the challenges of life.
