SOCSCI 2CC3 Lecture 4: Part 1: Nature vs. Nurture
Document Summary
As powerless and dependent persons, children are molded to become the social construction of reality into which they are born dictates. Rousseau believes that when children are born, they are blank slates and society prescribes them roles to fall into. They are born into a culture that defines their possibilities. The social structure varies, and can be redefined (as seen throughout history through new family forms) The most important agents of socialization are parents and extended family. Eriksen says that over the life cycle we feel certain things at different life stages. He says that everyone passes through each stage over the life course that he presents. Each stage has a positive or a negative pole that represents the success or failure to achieve the major characteristic of that stage. Each of eriksen"s stages build off of each other and failure in one outcome does not mean failure in another.
