Document Summary

Two different types of x-ray waves with two different energy peaks. One absorbed more by soft tissues one more by bone. Gives a picture of the inside of the body. The attenuation of x-rays is dependent on tissue density and chemistry. If the ray can"t get through the tissue is more dense. Estimate of bone mineral, fat and lean soft tissue mass. Training studies - see if their lean tissue/ muscle is increasing (mri is more accurate for this) To see how strong a bone is we have to press on it until it breaks. With dxa scan we"re measuring the mineral (inorganic) content which gives an indication of bone strength / risk for fracture. We can"t really tell the protein component (organic) of the bone through this - but both components would be ideal. Look at femur head - which is commonly broken in old people.
