Positivism mistakenly apply logic to the social world which gives a misleading interpretations. Idiographic explanation - when a researcher is trying to fully understand what happened in a particular setting or case. A detail description of the setting or time period is given from a particular point of view of the actors in the situation. The intent is to achieve a very deep understanding of things - the types of knowledge obtained is not transferrable to other settings. Explains why a particular group of people are behaving in a particular way. Qualitative research typically works best in this. Nomothetic research - instead of a deep understanding, a few particular event sor factors are observed. Laws and principles are identified - why something happened, how a led to b, but this approach is only interested in partial explanation. All of the factors are not considered only a few specific things.
