Being knowledgeable about research design helps determine validity and to ensure the research represents a widespread social pattern (generalizability?) Basic - often done by phds - when projects are designed to advance fundamental or basic knowledge of how the social world operates and why social change is happening. One would then theorize about what is fundamentally unique to social movements. Applied - designed to solve a concrete problem. Some researchers say it is atheoretical - there is no hypothesis tested but there is a paradigm. This type helps policy makers make decisions and go about solving problems. The audience may not necessarily be academics, but policymakers, which may be a clue of the type of research. When measuring the outcome of a change; having an intervention or measuring an effect. Social research enables the discovery of facts (knowledge of things, patterns or truths about the social world). Facts are discovered through the hands on work of the researcher.
