Document Summary
Unit 1 molecular components contribute to translation. Genetic info is transcribed from the sequences of nucleotides along strands of dna into rna. Made up of a single rna strand of 70-90 nucleotides. Large degree of complementarity along many stretches of a trna molecule, often results in many stretches of h-bonding between complementary nucleotide bases. Allows for formation of 4 double-helical segments and three characteristic loops see in all trna molecules; represented in 2-d as a (cid:862)clo(cid:448)e(cid:396) leaf(cid:863). Aminoacyl-trna synthetase activates trna molecules: each aminoacyl-trna synthetase is specific to the type of trna and corresponding amino acid. In particular, the active site of these enzymes recognizes the anticodon end of the trna and the region of the amino acid attachment site. Therefore 20 of these enzymes, one for each amino acid. Once bound to the active site, they catalyze the covalent attachment of trna molecules to its amino acid using energy from atp hydrolysis.
