Document Summary

Psyc 215 lecture 10 complexities of insecure self-esteem. We are proud of what we"ve done, trying to do something to be proud of. It feels good to think well of ourselves. Strive to do things which give us a positive self-evaluation. E. g. evaluation of a car (metaphor for esteem) >expectancy (the car goes really fast) x value (i want to go fast) Being able to go really fast in the fast car = satisfaction. Emotional reaction arises from the satisfaction of underlying motive. >expectancy (the car goes slow in snow-) x value (i need to get important) = negative emotions. *whatever you expect from the car x what/how much you value those expectancies somewhere. Maybe certain characteristics of our ancestors helped them to survive and things vs they passed those characteristics onto us. >master the environment, to be competent, to take care of problem.
