PSYC 215 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Automobile Layout, Unconditionally, Lexical Decision Task
Document Summary
Not only do we think about it, but it seems to matter bc we care. [ e. g. ] evaluation of car: (bmw), drove fast and that car drove fast so that car gave him the satisfaction of what he wants. Sometimes also evaluated negatively: in winter (rear wheel drive, terrible in snow and ice) evaluation + feelings abt the car shifted around and depended. Expectancy (car goes fast) x value (i want to go fast) Maybe self- esteem arises somehow from evolutionary development, humans have a wired-in self esteem. Maybe we have certain needs that give rise to self-esteem feelings. Wired to feel good when we are competent (survival of the fittest) maybe people felt rewarded when they felt competent to deal with their environment, so maybe they kept working at those skills. Perhaps ancestors who found it reinforcing to learn to master the environment were the ones most likely to survive and procreate.
