* v1 simple cell only active when all circular center-surround from layer 4 & lgn & rgc activated. Input from layer 4 cells +lgn & rgc with. Simple cells in v1 that only respond to bars of light. *center-surround receptive fields for point of light = assembled into bars of light. *connections of neurons = fundamental to how nervous system transform information so convergence of multiple input to simple cells = allow transformation from point to bar. Orientation column - mostly layer 2/3/5/6 not 4. Hubel & wiesel = recorded cats if took electrode in specific vertical column in visual cortex. Neurons in column = all respond to same orientation of light focused on localized region of retina. Ex: horizontal bar of light but systematic change in orientation as move electrode. *most influential & best characterized example for concept of column organization in cortex. Ex: neurons in adjacent columns = respond to slightly diff orientation but of same retina region.
