ANAT 321 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Protocol Stack, Simple Cell, Color Vision
Document Summary
P pathway to 4cb project up to structures in layers 2 & 3 higher order cortical regions; form. One structure spanning layer 2-3: blob (some go to blob, some go to interblob), blob especially for colour vision, interblob for form. M to 4ca 4b higher order cortical region. Diff components of visual perception are anatomically separated into diff pathways. Layer 4 neurons are centre-surround, same rf as cells feeding into them. Above or below layer 4 in v1 more complex rf (simple cells), getting convergent inputs from layer 4 neurons. Respond to bars of light on black background, or vice versa; respond best to particular orientation. Simple cell rf assembled by combining centre-surround rf; simple cells aren"t simple. Cortex made of functional columns; neurons within column respond to same orientations in particular region of visual space. Very low tech, and difficult to figure out that they were receptive fields.
