Document Summary

Is made up of 3 major polymer systems: Microtubule polymers are made of alpha-beta tubulin chains. Microtubules provide structure to cells and enable long-range transport. They are the roadways for intracellular transport; can ship things to different places. Cilia in lungs are specialized microtubules as are those in sperm cells with flagella. Flagella consists of b tubule and a tubule. laces. Microtubules form the mitotic spindle during cell division. Microtubule is the most abundant protein by mass in the brain (25%). A lot of associated proteins are involved in neurodegenerative diseases. In animal cells, they microtubules are organized by the centrosome. (-) end is embedded in the centrosome while the (+) ends are growing outwards. Microtubules are continuously built, broken down, and rebuilt. They grow until they reach the cell cortex and then collapse. Tubulin is a gtpase & the relative gtp hydrolysis events occur in beta- tubulin.
