Microtubules need a structure for organizing them and defining a polarity or structure. Centrosome are defined points in the cell associated with a nuclear envelope. In cases of sexual reproduction, you have to turn off microtubule organizing center and engage another mt organizing center nuclear envelope. Microtubules are continuously build, broken down, rebuilt: length is regulated by proteins and intrinsic characteristics of the microtubule themselves. Mt are roadways for intracellular transport: transporting to cell cortex and back again (endo, exocytosis) Mt are backbone of neurons: can run for very long lengths because in comparison to intermediate filaments they are very rigid, i. e. load bearing, mt in neurons are densely packed. Mediating transport of things back and forth. Cilia: encapsulate at basal body, ends in the basal body and + ends projecting out, almost every cell has cilia, still organized microtubules, need nucleating component.
