Document Summary
We used to think that there were specified areas on the tongue responsible for each type of taste. There are no particular regions for specific senses on our tongue but there are areas that are more receptive to each taste. Taste buds contain cells that are sensative to taste. About half of our taste perception comes from smell. Our taste system acts as a gate keeper. Foods that are dangerous/toxic do not taste good. Foods that are rich in calories and energy taste very good. Taste buds are located on the walls of the papillae. There are 2 types of cells that come together to form taste buds. Supporting cells - glossopharyngeal, taste cell output to the brain. Taste receptor cells have microvilli attached to them which go through taste pores. The tastants binds to receptors and trigger taste receptor cells to signal.
