Catholic churches: nuns and friars provided basic ed teaching and leaning: upper class white boys and men jesuit colleges. By confederation (1867), governments support catholic and public schools. Canada: residential school for aboriginal people 1800s- 2960s, federal day school integration 1960s-1970s. Us: racial separation of whites and blacks, civil rights, brows vs. board of education 1954. Teacher are socialized to treat boys and girls differently. Males receive more teacher time and attention than females. Teachers ask boys more challenging questions than they do girls and wait longer for boys to answer. Teacher are less tolerate of girls misbehavior. Teacher stereotypes boys and girl in terms of subject matter. Boys have trouble reading, writing and staying focused are some of the sterotypes. Teacher assume that girls love to learn and that boys like to do math more than girls. We find in most classrooms today is that teacher stereotype boys and girls in subject matter and in internal behavior.
