Document Summary
Catholic church: provided basic education (reading, writing, nothing advanced) Education was conceived around men and were dominate in education. Teaching is feminized : you can pay the teachers less and the prestige is less with female teachers. Notion of the ideal british person: the standard is white male, sporty, residential school assimilation. Compulsory and free education through high school. Expansion of post-secondary institutions (thanks to the baby-boomers) Women increase participation in education but remain in traditional fields. Males receive more teacher time and attention than females. Teachers ask boys more challenging question than they do girls and wait longer for boys to answer. Teachers are less tolerant of girls" behaviour. Teachers stereotype boys and girls in terms of subject matter. Boys are more likely to drop out, flunk out, and act out in class. Gender identification becomes important (especially from peers) Boys are socialized into hegemonic (heterosexual) masculinity with peers-leads to bullying.
