Deals with demands of reality, partially conscious. Reality principle, bringing pleasure within the norms of society. Dev depends on warmth, care, attention with supervision, direct training / Super ego type type of criminal. Harsh neurotic criminal, feeling guilty unconsciously seeking punishment. Very strict no warmth environment creates harsh super ego. Taught deviant moral code, but otherwise healthy, good compass, just your true north is off. Crim beh consequence of early seperation from caregivers 0. 5-3 years. Seperation prevents effective social dev from taking place. W/o effective social dev, they have long term problems in positive social relationships (lack of socialization / conscience) Bowlby (1944) studied 44 juvenile thieves and matched a control group of non-delinquent kids. 39% delinquint group had complete separation from mom for 6+ months in first 5 years of life vs 5% in non-delinquent group. Modern studeis find a much smaller relations, barely relavent. Proposed tentative causal formula for crime and delinquency.
