Psychoanalysis is a method for threating psychopathologies. Criminal behaviour results from dynamic internal forces within an individual. The nature of these forces, and the conflicts between them, influenced by childhood experiences. Three primary forces make up personality: (1) id, (2) superego, and (3) ego. Focuses on basic biological urges (survival, act aggresively, sex) Guided by the pleasure principle- obtain immediate pleasure and avoid plain. Ignores reality, such as the consequences of ones behaviour. Works in direct opposition to the id. Represents internalization of rules and restrictions of society (through process of socialization) Manages the conflict between the id and super ego.
