PSYC 2500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Frontal Lobe, Metacognition, Working Memory
Document Summary
Infants remember and forget, and can be prompted to remember things that they"ve forgotten. Memory rapidly improves in infants and toddlers (see fig 7-1) Improvements in memory are related to growth in the brain. Amygdala and hippocampus are related to the initial storage of memories (develop by 6 mths) Frontal cortex is related to retrieval of stored memories. Use more effective strategies + more knowledge. Tied ribbon from 2-3 month old infant"s leg to mobile. A few weeks later forgot but if mobile was moved remembered. Three important features of memory are present at 2-3 months of age. Over time events are no longer recalled. A cue can be used to access past memory. Preschoolers use simple strategies like touching an object not too effective. Older children and adolescents use rehearsal, organization, elaboration, and chunking. Working memory briefly stores a small amount of info. It must be transferred and stored in long-term memory. Needs to be accessed from long-term memory.
