Document Summary

Roots of memory are laid down in the first few months after birth: young babies can remember for a few days or weeks at a time. Important features of memory present at 2-3 months: event from past is remembered, over time events are no longer recalled, a cue can be used to access past memory. Working memory (short term memory) briefly stores a small amount of info: note pad. It must be transferred and stored in long term memory. Needs to be accessed from long-term memory. Preschoolers use simple strategies: touching an object not too effective. Older children and adolescents use: rehearsal, organization, elaboration, chunking. Metacognition (thinking about thinking: metamemory, thinking about how you remember things, metacognitive knowledge, thinking about what you know, cognitive self-regulation, ability to inhibit external stimuli and persevere. Rehearsal 7-8 years: repeat information that needs to be remembered. Organization: place related material together, for an exam might use cue cards or a memory cue sheet.
