The vagina of a young girl is lined with a simple cuboidal epithelium. At puberty, it changes to a strati ed squamous epithelium (saladin 8th ed. p. 168). Explain the functional signi cance of this structural change in vaginal epithelium. Full marks: name the two types of epithelium, write about the function of each wrt to pre and post pubertal function of the vagina. Describe the difference between epithelium and connective tissue in terms of the density of cells relative to extracellular matrix and relate this to function. Epithelium cells densely packed, very little extracellular space. Functionally acts as a barrier, therefore cells must be tightly bound to each other to regulate what can cross the barrier & to maintain structural integrity. Connective tissue cells widely spaced, lots of extracellular space surrounding cells.
