PSYC3032 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Becoming Human, Hunter-Gatherer, Mortar And Pestle
Document Summary
Lecture 1 - we began shaping our own evolutionary pathway via social organization, tools & fire. Step 3: agriculture: division of labour, planning for the future. In hunter/gatherer societies - have items that are much easier to transport and not many. Shifts from a life of going whenever we want/wherever we want --> forced sedentary. It"s believed that there was conflict between these two different lifestyles. Private property: from universal sharing to acceptance of inequality. Hunter gatherer: acceptable to ask for things, don"t want to seem stingy, universal sharing makes sense in a world where you have no storage, best hunters are the most generous hunters. Sharing is designed to be as fair as possible: eat today what you catch today no insurance easy to see whose slacking off etc, able to shape community works out for everybody. If you try to live a hunter gatherer lifestyle as a farmer --> does(cid:374)"t work so well.
