BIOS1301 Ecology and Sustainability Part 7
LEC 15:
Biodiversity Management
Impacts
o Reduced biodiversity
o Release of greenhouse gases
o Disrupted water cycles
o Increased soil erosion
o Disrupted livelihoods
Responsibility
o Landholders
o Local governments
o Global drivers
Australian context
o Native vegetation clearing
Important as it is highly diverse and species rich, vital to
Australia’s biodiversity akig up to 85% of all vegetatio,
sustaining ecosystem function and processes, buffering impacts
of extreme climates, binding and nourishing soils, and cleansing
the air and water systems
o The native vegetation has been cleared or has become degraded and
fragmented due to human activity.
o Threats:
Loss, fragmentation and degradation of habitats
Unsustainable use of natural resources
Invasive species
Changes to hydrological flows and water quality
Disruptive fire regimes
Climate change
Not awarding natural resources value
Lack of protection
Case Study: rewilding Europe
o Australia has the highest land clearing out of all first world countries
o Dissolving threatened species act: broken agreement with four
conventions
The Framework Convention on Climate Change
Native Vegetation Act 2003
o Ensures the sustainable management and conservation of native
vegetation
o Ensures not just biodiversity, but soil, salinity and water impacts of
clearing are scientifically assessed.
