BIOS1301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Rewilding Europe, Invasive Species
BIOS1301 – Ecology and Sustainability – Part 7
LEC 15:
Biodiversity Management
• Impacts
o Reduced biodiversity
o Release of greenhouse gases
o Disrupted water cycles
o Increased soil erosion
o Disrupted livelihoods
• Responsibility
o Landholders
o Local governments
o Global drivers
• Australian context
o Native vegetation clearing
• Important as it is highly diverse and species rich, vital to
Australia’s biodiversity akig up to 85% of all vegetatio,
sustaining ecosystem function and processes, buffering impacts
of extreme climates, binding and nourishing soils, and cleansing
the air and water systems
o The native vegetation has been cleared or has become degraded and
fragmented due to human activity.
o Threats:
• Loss, fragmentation and degradation of habitats
• Unsustainable use of natural resources
• Invasive species
• Changes to hydrological flows and water quality
• Disruptive fire regimes
• Climate change
• Not awarding natural resources value
• Lack of protection
• Case Study: rewilding Europe
o Australia has the highest land clearing out of all first world countries
o Dissolving threatened species act: broken agreement with four
conventions
• The Framework Convention on Climate Change
• Native Vegetation Act 2003
o Ensures the sustainable management and conservation of native
vegetation
o Ensures not just biodiversity, but soil, salinity and water impacts of
clearing are scientifically assessed.
