This work is about a young friend of socrates phaedi. It was a custom that while the ship which the athenians send to delos is at sail there will e no public executions. Ship is said to have brought theseus to crete. Phaedi did not pity socrates because he knew that socrates was divine and would enjoy his next life. Socrates say pleasure is the same as pain. Only one can be present at a given time. Socrates started writing line of poetry while he was in jail. Socrates has dreams of being a musician. Writes a few lines of poetry before he dies. A philosopher should not take his own life. Socrates says that a philosopher should never take his own life. Only another man may kill a philosopher. Socrates argues that because humans are possessions of gods he should not take his own life without god first summoning him. The public execution of socrates was his calling.
