Xenophon explains to readers that socrates was able to control himself, and that he had trained himself extremely diligently in order to prevent such urges from taking over him. Sourcebook plato: phaedo on the death of socrates. Socrates was a citizen of athens, and many people did not like how he challenged received wisdom: plato and phaedo were among those that respected socrates. Phaedo was there when socrates was voted to die via poison. Plato quotes phaedo telling their friend echecrates what happened: speaking at phlius, northern peloponnese, a few days/ weeks after socrates died.
