Psychological disorders have both biological (nature) and environmental (nurture) influences. Bio-psycho-social model of illness- a way of understanding disorder that assumes disorder is caused by biological, psychological, and social factors. A behavior is considered a psychological disorder not only by if the behavior is abnormal, but also if it is maladaptive where it causes distress and dysfunction to the individual. Trepanation (drilling holes in the skull) has been used since prehistoric times trying to cure epilepsy, schizophrenia, and other psychological disorders.
