Psychopathology: patterns of thought, emotion, and behavior that are maladaptive, disruptive, or uncomfortable for either the person affected or for others. What is abnormal: infrequent- most people don"t experience it, suffering- some stress around you. You or the people around you are suffering: impaired functioning: a practical approach- failure to meet basic life expectations (getting out of bed, eating, going to work/school) Psychological causes- early childhood experiences, learned reactions to stress. Social causes- environment can cause them, what you are going through. Diathesis-stress model: diathesis: people are pre-disposed to psychological diseases. High diathesis- less stress to develop disorder low diathesis- more stress to develop disorder: stress: disorder appears when some stressors are encountered, ex: family has a history of heart disease, cancer, depression. Scale of 0-100 of how well you"re functioning. Note: the dsm-5 appeared in may 2013. Our textbook was written before dsm-5 was published. Dsm-iv in this class because it is consistent with the textbook.
