Document Summary

Stress is a psychological and physiological reaction that occurs when perceived demands exceed existing resources to meet those demands. Stress refers to both the event (stressor) and the experiences in response to the event (the stress response). Lazarus and folkman developed a cognitive appraisal theory of stress to determine why some people react calmly in stressful situations. The term appraisal refers to the cognitive act of assessing and evaluating the potential threat and demands of an event. First, the individual perceives a potential threat and begins the primary appraisal (cid:271)(cid:455) aski(cid:374)g herself (cid:862)is this a threat?(cid:863). If the a(cid:374)swer is (cid:374)o, the(cid:455) wo(cid:374)t feel stress. But if the a(cid:374)swer is (cid:455)es, the(cid:455) will e(cid:454)perie(cid:374)(cid:272)e a physiological stress reaction as well as an emotional reaction. As these events unfold, the secondary appraisal begins, the person must determine how to cope with the threat.
