Stress: a psychological and physiological reaction that occurs when perceived demands exceeds existing resources to meet these demands. Refers to both events(stressor) and experiences in response to the events (the stress response) Cognitive appraisal theory of stress and demands of an event. Appraisal - the cognitive act of assessing and evaluating the potential threat. The individual perceive a potential threat and begins the primary appraisal by asking if this is a threat. Physiological and emotional reaction -- the secondary appraisal -- determine how to cope with stressor. Not anyone finds the similar events equally stressful. As stress increases the probability of getting ill increases. Some level of stress can be helpful. A positive effect on performance when the task is simple. If the task is complex, it will harm performance. Canon: physical response to threat is somewhat general - fight or flight: a set of physiological changes that occur in response to psychological or physical threat.
