Stress: a psychological and physiological reason that occurs when perceived demands exceed existing resources to meet those demands: refers to both event (stressors) and experiences in response to these events (the stress response) Richard lazarus and susan folkman developed a cognitive appraisal theory of stress. Different events are differently stressful to different people. [table 14. 2 page 599] more points more likely to be ill. Some stress can serve as a motivation for simple task. Not good for hard task stress take up too much cognitive abilities. Walter cannon early researcher into the phenomenon of stress. Fight or flight response: a set of physiological changes that occurs in response to psychological or physical threats. Figure 14. 4 page 601 look at the graph. The stress pathways the green one is the flight of flight response pathway. Hpa axis: a neural and endocrine circuit that provides communication between the nervous system (the hypothalamus) and the endocrine (pituitary and adrenal glands)
