Medications for Dyslipidemia
• Triangle of obesity related problems
o Insulin resistance → diabetes
o Systemic hypertension
o Dyslipidemia (atherogenic)
o * also CVD is a problem
• Atherosclerosis
o Arteries become narrowed (cholesterol deposits)
o Deposition of lipoproteins, macrophages, mediators, etc. → formation
of plaques → impaired blood flow → ischemia
o Plaques can rupture → clot → blood loss
• Dyslipidemia treatment: Non-pharmacologic
o Lifestyle changes
▪ Diet high in fruits/veggies/whole grains/ fish
▪ Low fait dairy and lean poultry
▪ Exercise!!
• Less LDL, more HDL
o Weight control
o Stop smoking
• Dyslipidemia treatment: Pharmacologic
o HMG-Co-A reductase inhibitors (Statins)
▪ Inhibit cholesterol synthesis by inhibiting rate-limiting enzyme
in synthesis pathway
▪ Effects
• Decrease LDL
• Decrease TGs
• Increase HDL
• Can also stabilize atherosclerotic plaques
▪ Most effective meds for lowering cholesterol!
▪ Only meds recommended for managing CV risk!
