CEE 1503 Study Guide - Final Guide: Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act, National Ambient Air Quality Standards
Document Summary
Ecology: study ofthe totality/pattern of relations between organisms and their environment. Population: group of individuals of one kind of organism. Ecosystem: community and non-living environment with which it interacts (i. e. pond, forest) Habitat: a place wlin ecosystem where a population of organisms lives. Primary producers (autotrophs): self-feeding plants (only require sunlight and nutrients) Consumers (heterotrophs): organisms feed on plants or each other. (chemotrophs)- organisms obtain energy from (in)organic rather than light. Food chain: linear description of feeding relations in an ecosystem. Abiotic substances: basic organic and inorganic compounds. (i. e. water, oxygen, calcium, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, amino and humic acids) Producers: rooted or floating plants generally growing in shallow water. Consumers: primary- herbivores feed directly on plant or remains (i. e. zooplankton) Decomposers: aquatic bacteria & fungi distributed throughout water, abundant in mud-water interface at bottom of pond. Converts complex organics into simple forms or breaks down completely.
