Went to the portuguese first and they said no. Went to europe to the king and queen. Spanish were interested in finding special gold, metals and power. August 1492, he left the canaries and arrived in the indies in october 1492. Then he said to cuba, hispaniola natives new world. He went back to spain to share the good news portugal claimed the land that he had discovered was in the sphere they controlled. The king and queen did not agree, so they petitioned the pope to grant them power over the newly discovered land. He had all the power to grant sovereignty over the land. The line of demarcation was discovered through the treaty of tordesillas: portuguese- east/ spanish- west. Spain received the okay to explore the new land.
