Beggining of european colonization (driven by god, gold(was at the heat of it), glory) They found him and put him in charge of finding a route to asia. Spanish wanted to establish trade networks and a route to the far east/indies. Columbus was a merchant from italy, and was convinced he could find a route from asia. Spanish also wanted to find gold and precious metals/political power. Columbus left from the canary islands and arrived in october of 1492, thinking he was in the. He then sailed to cuba, hispanola (dr, haiti). this is where he got gold. and it set off the new spanish obsession with gold. Portugual claimed the land where colombous had landed, saying it was within portugal sphere. King and queen petitioned pope to clarify that it was their land. Pope had the power to recognize city-states and who had power over land. Line of demarcation was established in the treaty of tordesillas (1494)
