Throughout africa, the concept of slavery had already been known. Africans has been enslaving and trading other africans long before the arrival of europeans. Many and most of these slaves were acquired through surprise raids and wars that villages had against one another. It was not until in 1441 when a portuguese sailor named antam concalvez attacked and captured. 12 africans that the european slave trade began (mintz 40). It was at this time that the introduction of european goods drove many africans to begin to sell other africans in exchange for resources that were extremely scarce in africa at the time. Africans began deceiving their brethren into being sold. One slave trader records one african asking another for help in. It is important to note that during this time, africans began to widen their parameter on who was at risk of enslavement and thus increased the number of africans sold to europeans.
